Design Matters

Built in 1897 as the flagship Kaufmann’s department store, by prominent Pittsburgh architect Charles Bickel, who designed many other buildings in the city including the Concordia Club (now O’Hara Student Center at the University of Pittsburgh) and the South Side Market Building. In 1913, architects Janssen & Abbott, also known for the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, added a white terra cotta addition and the now iconic outdoor clock. In the late 1920s local architect Benno Janssen and his new partner William Cocken redesigned the main floor of the store. Kaufman later commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his executive offices on the top floor, as well as his country house Fallingwater.
